News - Young & Partners play a key role at a recent 5-day Conference on International Commercial Arbitration at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee

Iain Clark’s first teaching engagement as a Visiting Lecturer to the CEPMLP, was two days of Coaching/Teaching at the CEPMLP at the University of Dundee on 2 and 3 September 2009, in their 5-day Conference entitled “An Introduction to International Commercial Arbitration”.  The Conference was attended by international delegates from Nigeria, Indonesia, China, Russia, Ireland, and Mexico.  Iain’s input involved him facilitating workshops in his first day, followed by a key speech on “10 Top (Practical) Tips on International Commercial Arbitration”.  For copies of the handout, please click this link.

Ruth Waters, Managing Partner of our Glasgow Office, also spoke about her area of specialism, Construction Law, and the use Adjudication as a form of dispute resolution (a remedy less well known abroad).

On the second day, Iain ran a whole day Mock Arbitration, acting as Arbitrator, where the delegates adopted roles of Counsel for the Claimant and Respondent, and as witnesses.  It is fair to say the delegates were extremely enthusiastic, and as well as enjoying this part of the Conference, it was an excellent way of learning.

Seminar Director, Steven P Walker, Advocate & Barrister, commented “We ran this 5 day conference as an introduction to International Commercial Arbitration for students, lawyers, and in-house lawyers and Executives from a number of forward-thinking companies from the global natural resource industry.  It was a pleasure to invite Iain Clark and Ruth Waters to assist in delivering this training to delegates.  It was highly beneficial for them to hear the views, practises and strategies of practitioners in the field of international dispute resolution.”

We look forward to hearing about further developments – both at home and abroad.
